NC Rookie Challenge Volunteers

On January 10, 2009, we all volunteered at the first NC FLL Rookie Challenge in Greensboro, NC. Even though the day was very long, it was so fun to be on the volunteer side and help out! Some of us timed the practice tables, some of us managed score sheets for the refs, some were assistants for the organizers, and 2 of our coaches were judges. None of us had really noticed how much work the volunteers put into the competition before yesterday!

It was great to see the level of excitement all day long among the teams. And it was amazing to see how young some of the teams were, and hear some of the questions as they tried to figure out the layout of the competition. It's hard to believe that we were just like that just over 2 years ago!

At the end of the day while the judges were collaborating, we got to demonstrate our research presentation in front of a crowd of over 400 people! Right before we went on, we also found out that they were going to ask us judging questions and do a short "Team Building Interview" along with a team building challenge! It made us nervous, but as Tad said at the end of the day, "Can we PLEASE do that again soon???"

Before we went to the Rookie Challenge, we brainstormed a list of research tips to hand out. If you would like to see these, click here.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who helped this year! We won the top FIRST LEGO League honors at the North Carolina competition on December 6th, 2008!

The Champion's Award is "the most prestigious award a FLL team can win at a tournament, honors the team that is strongest over all four areas of Teamwork, Performance, Design and Research. The FLL Values of math and science outreach and gracious professionalism are also important elements that are considered when judges determine the Champion Award winning team.) "

We also won 2nd place for our robot performance on the table.

About Us

We are a third year First Lego League team from Cary, NC. The ages of our home-schooled team range from 11-13. We have six team members, five boys and one girl. We've really enjoyed being together and working together for these 3 years.

This year, we learned a ton of things about water conservation. However, during the year we haven't just learned about water conservation, we have learned how to communicate our ideas to each other, how to build a website, how to do a global on-line survey, and how to stay on task.
